Sahmeer sat upon the couch placed near the center of the chamber, while numerous parchments, sealed scrolls, and reports from different provinces lay spread across the low table before him. Sunlight from the high latticed windows fell in long golden lines over the papers, shifting slowly as the afternoon deepened. His posture remained straight, composed, and disciplined, the posture of a man born to command even in silence.
One by one, he reviewed the matters placed before him. Some reports he read fully, some he dismissed after a glance, while others he marked with brief instructions in firm strokes of ink. To any outsider, it would appear that the Sultan was wholly absorbed in affairs of the kingdom.
